Winter brings the cold months that gives you a reason to break out your old favorite knit sweaters to add back into your fashion rotation. These cozy sweaters are perfect, they never fail to make you happy, comfy, and cute. But as you are pulling that extra-soft sweater over your head, it can be detrimental to your hair.

You pull your head through the neck hole of the sweater only to come out on the other side with a frizzy mess on top of your head. This is every girl’s and guy’s (we see you with the long flow Thor locks) nightmare. A perfect hairstyle being ruined by a perfect sweater created a perfectly bad situation. But that isn’t even the worst part. Winter tends to dry out your hair and make it more staticy in general. This means every time you rub against something, you can feel the crazy little strands reaching out to the surface around you, you can feel the hairs wrapping around your neck, and you will never forget the sound it makes as you gather it in a bundles and run your hand to the end to calm the static.

Winter hair is dry, brittle, and overall, unhealthy. But we can help! At Belle Ross Spa & Salon, we know that winter hair is less than perfect, so we are going to offer some tips to keep your hair healthy and hydrated, even in the colder months.

Stop Washing It

Shampoo can remove dirt from your hair, but it also strips the natural oils from your hair. The natural oils are what keep your hair healthy and hydrated. Keep those natural oils in your hair and try to shampoo only once or twice a week. Don’t worry, winter means hat and beanie season, cover greasy hair with your favorite hat or use dry shampoo as a substitute.

Make Sure to Condition

While we want to skip the shampoo, we don’t want you to skip the conditioner! Every time you shower, make sure to use conditioner, even if you don’t shampoo. This will help keep your hair healthy and hydrated.

Trim Often

As the ends of your hair get brittle, they can make your hair seem even more dry and damaged. Cutting your hair regularly throughout the winter can help keep your hair looking and feeling healthier.

Avoid Heat

We get it, all you want to do during cold winter days is hop in a hot shower, but they will dry out your hair even more. Keep your showers warm and short. If you feel the need to take a hot shower, don’t wash your hair and throw on a shower cap. You will also want to avoid using heat styling tools. These cause damage to your hair no matter what time of year it is, but in winter you are sure to notice it more.

There are many other tips to keep your hair healthy and hydrated throughout the winter. These include wearing hats, getting a humidifier, staying hydrated, eating healthy fats, getting your vitamin C, drying your hair before leaving the house, the list goes on and on. Taking care of your hair in the winter isn’t hard, it just takes a little extra effort.
